Brno Hosts International Workshop on the Global Burden of Disease Study

Brno will host the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Brno Workshop on 23–24 April 2026, bringing together public health, health policy, and epidemiology professionals, researchers, and students from Czechia and across Central Europe for a two-day programme focused on population health measurement and evidence-informed decision-making. The workshop, organised by the Masaryk Centre for Global Health, will cover the foundations of the GBD study, demographic methods, causes of death, non-fatal burden, risk factors, and the use of visualisation tools for benchmarking and interpretation.
A key speaker at the event will be Prof. Mohsen Naghavi, MD, PhD, MPH, Professor of Health Metrics Sciences at the University of Washington and Director of Subnational Burden of Disease Estimation at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). He also serves on the Global Burden of Disease Scientific Council and leads major areas of GBD work, including causes of death and subnational burden estimation, making him one of the leading figures in the field of global health metrics.
The GBD Brno workshop is intended to strengthen regional engagement with burden of disease research and to support the interpretation and use of GBD evidence in research, policy, and public health practice. Alongside expert-led lectures, the programme will include practical exercises designed to help participants work directly with GBD tools and results, with particular relevance to Czechia and the wider Central European region.
